A Short Story
Session 3 - Day 8

Things are looking up!

One day a bard named Marx and a ranger named Oskar came to Andergast. They hire Fen and Sara to accompany them into the forest. There they find a strange cave with an angry brown bear. They kill it and return to Andergast victorious and many silver coins richer.

The Caves of Chaos.

The duo set out again, but with Fen and Sara drinking the day away with their reward they must hire a fresh band of Men-At-Arms. They return to the cave, but they lose their nerve and retreat.

They decide to find the Caves of Chaos. Utilizing the rumors from the tavern, they find the dreaded cave system. They think it best to head back to Andergast and seek help.

When returning to Andergast they encounter a pack of Vorr. Unwilling to sacrifice their Men-At-Arms to the Vorr, they are attacked. Only the Man-At-Arms, Burtham, and one other Man-At-Arms survives to tell the tale.

A Lesson on Traps
Session 2 - Days 4 thru 7

I am Burfacor, Dragonborn!

A Dragonborn fighter named Burfacor joined the party in the morning of Day 4. The party set out to investigate the nearby river. The River of Chaos is 200 yards wide at its narrowest point making the crossing treacherous. But that doesn’t stop Burfacor from trying. Yet a small scouting party of goblins on a river island stop him with several volleys from their shortbows.

Deciding that the river is not worth investigating, they turn north once again in search of the Caves of Chaos. They come across the tracks of kobolds and followed them to a hidden temple. They recognized the markings of Baphomet decorating the alter and the doors. Theo halted the party after noticing a strange pile of gibs near a glowing symbol of Baphomet. Not to be dissuaded by some blood and gore, Burfacor pushes past Theo and attempts to open the door.

Baphomet is slain by a trap.

Valorand and Tamarity, Party PR and the TOMB OF LIGHTNING

Valorand, a high elf wizard of a foul mind, and Tamarity, a tiefling sorceress searching for true love, arrive in Andergast and join the party. They set out for the Caves of Chaos after a rough introduction. Already Valorand makes a bad impression touring Andergast while Tamarity flirts with the party veterans comparing them to the heroes in her childhood stories.
The party makes progress through the Forest of Chaos and reach a forest clearing. Could this be it? A strange mound… The party investigate and find an underground tomb, but it is trapped with columns of lightning, but they seem to only activate on contact. While scouting Valorand lets loose a bolt of fire into the darkness startling several bats. The party scatter while Valorand focuses on the swarm of nipping bats. A bat touches a column. There’ s a loud bang and Valorand finds himself bleeding out on the cave floor. Just as he thinks things can’t get any worse, a skeleton shoots him with an arrow. But the arrow does not kill him…

Valorand has been slain by internal hemorrhaging.

The rest of the party destroy the skeleton and Theo bravely takes a magic relic from a trapped sarcophagus. They return to the keep with a 3-way split of treasure.

First day out
Session 1 (Day 1 thru Day 3)

Arrival at the Fort on the Borderlands

The party (Hoffhurko, Koladavaal, and Theo) arrives after several days of travel to Fort Andergast. After introducing themselves to the militia they make their acquaintances with the locals. They learn about the treacherous demihumans lurking in the nearby forest. The Captain of the Guard is relieved to finally have fresh recruits to fight off the threat.

First Blood

The party hires several men-at-arms (Sara, Fen, and Stasher) to bolster their strength and sets out in search of a rumored goblin lair. Within hours of traveling in the forest they encounter a wandering ogre and ambush the foul creature. With a mighty swing it kills Stasher, smashing his head off his shoulders. The brave Koladavaal restored the party’s morale by rushing the ogre, crying vengeance! Soon after the combined might of the party proved more than the ogre could withstand and it fell. The acolyte lead the party in solemn prayer and buried the fallen comrade.

The Mad Hermit

At dusk the party finds a clearing with a large hollow tree. The tree is guarded by a mountain lion, but the party quickly dispatches it. Much to their dismay the party learns that the tree is a lair used by a gnomish ranger. When the ranger finds the party with his dead pet he attacks them. He is incapacitated quickly.

Theo and Koladavaal settle down the ranger and rest the night. In the morning they convince him to take the party back to the fort so that he can be compensated for the loss of his pet. Whether by choice or by accident the ranger leads the party into a Bugbear snare. The Mad Hermit is caught in a snare and impaled upon tree spikes.

A Grim Sight

Returning to the clearing, the party finds a man plunging his dagger into an elf over and over again. He calms down suddenly and greets the party as if nothing had happened. As he approaches the party, Theo notices a strange songbird staring at them. He takes the chance and shoots the bird dead with his crossbow. The songbird’s death causes a sudden pain in their minds, but it seemed to free the man from his hypnotic trance. Unable to cope with killing his traveling companion the man takes his own life.

Back to Bed

The party rushes back to the fort to recover. The Captain of the Guard grins as he welcomes them back from their first patrol in the borderlands.
